ICT Solution: AI to monitor footage from public spaces and Machine Learning

The Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic wants to use Artificial Intelligence to monitor Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage in full mode, online and offline, including tracking the atypical behaviour of people in different situations. In terms of the protection of public spaces, the system would help identify suspicious behaviour taking place in the analysed public space. While the main focus will be on prevention of terrorist attacks, the system will be used for identifications of other illegal activities. From the perspective of the Police Force, all analyses will be done in real time with alerts on the security situation. The efficiency of monitoring and analysis of footage could reach 70% compared to the current 10% of analysed content.

Currently, the trend is to deploy camera systems that require attention and a large amount of working time to monitor video footage. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities has a potential to be beneficial in reducing the response time and increasing the efficiency of camera system operators. A significant benefit of deploying AI is also in back-office processing, where a large amount of video footage needs to be analysed and identified when activity appears in the video footage.

The tools should be compliant with the regulatory framework on Cybersecurity, AI and personal data protection (GDPR) although face recognition is not foreseen.
